Do You Need an iFlow, an API, or an Event?

Defaulting to an iFlow for every requirement is how integration estates become unmaintainable. This is the decision framework we apply, based on SAP's own ISA-M methodology.

Use process integration (iFlow) when

This is the workhorse pattern — but it is stateful and needs operating, so it should be a deliberate choice.

SAP Integration Suite FAQs

What is the difference between SAP Integration Suite and SAP CPI?

SAP CPI is the informal name for the Cloud Integration capability, which is one component of SAP Integration Suite. The Suite is the whole platform: Cloud Integration plus API Management, Event Mesh, Integration Advisor, Trading Partner Management, Graph and Integration Assessment. In short, CPI is part of Integration Suite, not a synonym for it.

Is SAP Integration Suite a replacement for SAP PI/PO?

Yes, it is the strategic successor. SAP PI/PO remains supported for a defined period, but no new innovation is going into it. The realistic approach is a planned, wave-based migration rather than either a rush or indefinite delay — the interfaces you migrate last should be the ones with the most bespoke Java and adapter module logic.

Can we keep some integration on-premise for data residency reasons?

Yes. The Edge Integration Cell lets you run integration flows within your own network under Kubernetes while still designing and managing them in the cloud tenant. This is the usual answer for regulated data that cannot transit a public cloud region.

Do we need API Management if we already have Cloud Integration?

If your integrations are all system-to-system batch or file exchanges, probably not. You need it when multiple consumers want the same data in real time, or when you expose anything to external partners — that is when throttling, quotas, key management and usage analytics stop being optional.

How long does an integration assessment take?

For a mid-sized landscape, typically three to five weeks: one to two weeks of discovery and interviews, then classification, target architecture and a wave plan. You get an interface inventory, pattern mapping, governance recommendations and a costed migration roadmap.

Can you work with our existing integration team?

Yes, and it is usually the better model. We commonly set up the platform, governance and the first wave of interfaces, then transfer knowledge so your team delivers subsequent waves with us reviewing and handling the harder cases.
