SAP Functional Consulting Services
Technology is rarely why an SAP project disappoints. It is usually because nobody translated how the business actually works into how the system was configured. That translation is what functional consulting is for.
CssInfotech provides SAP functional consultants across finance, controlling, procurement, sales, production, quality and maintenance — people who have run these processes, not just configured screens, and who can talk to a controller as easily as to a developer.

How We Engage
Functional consulting is needed at very different points in a system's life. We work in all of them.
Process Design & Blueprinting
Understand the business first, configure second.
- Process discovery workshops with the people doing the work
- Fit-gap analysis against SAP standard capability
- To-be process design with documented decisions
- Organisational structure and master data strategy
Configuration & Build
Configuration that is documented and reproducible.
- Customising across the relevant modules
- Integration points between finance and logistics validated
- Functional specifications for genuinely needed developments
- Configuration rationale documented, not just the settings
Testing & UAT Support
Testing designed around real business scenarios.
- Test scenario and script design from actual process flows
- Unit, string and integration test execution
- UAT facilitation and defect triage with the business
- Regression test packs reusable at every future change
Training & Enablement
Users who understand why, not just which button.
- Role-based training material and quick reference guides
- Key user and train-the-trainer programmes
- Process documentation kept current after go-live
- Floor-walking support during the first weeks
Period Close Support
Extra hands and expertise when it matters most.
- Month, quarter and year-end close support
- Reconciliation issue investigation and resolution
- Close process streamlining and automation opportunities
- Coverage during your team's leave or transition periods
Optimisation & Enhancement
Improve what you already run.
- Process efficiency reviews against standard capability
- Retiring workarounds that newer releases have made unnecessary
- Reporting improvements using embedded analytics
- Change request delivery on a retained basis
Our Functional Delivery Approach
We keep business owners involved at every step, because functional decisions that only IT understands do not survive contact with users.
- Understand the businessWe sit with the people who do the work, not only the process owners. Documented processes and actual practice are rarely the same thing.
- Fit-gap against standardWe demonstrate what SAP does out of the box, then discuss each genuine gap with a named business owner and a documented rationale.
- Design and documentTo-be process design, configuration approach and master data rules written down in language business users can review and approve.
- Configure and validateConfiguration built in iterations with regular business walkthroughs, so misunderstandings surface in week two rather than at UAT.
- Test with the businessScenario-based testing that the business owns, with defect triage jointly prioritised rather than IT deciding severity alone.
- Enable and supportTraining, go-live support and hypercare through the first period close, then a documented handover to steady-state support.
Why Functional Quality Determines Project Outcomes
The most expensive problems we get called in to fix are almost never technical. They are functional decisions made without enough business understanding.
- Master data design — get it wrong and every downstream process suffers permanently
- Organisational structure — extremely painful to change once transactions exist
- Document splitting — decided early, affects every financial report afterwards
- Pricing procedures — a poor design becomes a permanent maintenance burden
- Release strategies — too rigid and users work around them entirely
- Costing approach — drives whether management trusts the margin numbers
- Integration settings — where finance and logistics meet is where reconciliation breaks
- Authorisation design — segregation of duties is a functional question, not just security
Industries We Serve
Functional configuration is deeply industry-specific. These are the sectors where we bring existing process knowledge.
Why Choose CssInfotech for Functional Consulting
The difference between an adequate functional consultant and a good one shows up two years later, in how much workaround the business has built.
Consultants who speak business
Our functional people can hold a conversation with a financial controller about accruals or with a planner about capacity, without translating everything into table names first.
Integration-aware
Most difficult functional issues live where modules meet — goods receipt to invoice, delivery to billing, production to costing. We design those boundaries deliberately.
We write things down
Configuration rationale, master data rules and process decisions get documented. Two years later, someone can understand why a setting is the way it is.
Technical partners in-house
When a gap genuinely needs development, our ABAP and Fiori teams are in the same company, so the functional spec does not go over a wall to a third party.
S/4HANA data model fluency
The Universal Journal, Business Partner and Material Ledger changes are functional shifts, not just technical ones. We know what they mean for your close process.
Flexible resourcing
Full project teams, a single specialist for a tricky area, or period-close cover when your own team is stretched. All are normal engagements for us.
SAP Functional Consulting FAQs
What is the difference between functional and technical SAP consulting?
A functional consultant translates business requirements into SAP configuration and process design — they own the "what and why". A technical consultant builds what configuration cannot deliver: ABAP code, Fiori apps, interfaces and reports. Good projects need both working closely, which is why we keep both capabilities in one team. See our SAP technical services page for the other side.
Can you provide a single consultant for a specific module?
Yes. A lot of our work is exactly that — one experienced FI, CO, MM, SD, PP or QM consultant joining your team for a project, a specific problem area, or a period of cover. We can provide part-time or full-time, and we keep a senior consultant available for review on longer engagements.
Do your consultants work on ECC as well as S/4HANA?
Yes, both. That matters more than people expect during a migration, because you need someone who understands the ECC configuration as it exists today and what it becomes in S/4HANA — particularly for finance, where the Universal Journal changes the underlying model substantially.
Can you help us fix a badly configured system rather than reimplement?
Often, yes. We start with an assessment of what is actually causing the pain, since it is frequently a handful of specific design decisions rather than the whole configuration. Targeted remediation is usually far cheaper than reimplementation, and we will tell you honestly if the balance tips the other way.
How do you handle period-close support?
Either as scheduled cover for a defined number of days around each close, or as on-call support with an agreed response time. We work through your close checklist with your team, investigate reconciliation differences, and document recurring issues so the next close is smoother rather than identical.
Do you provide documentation we can keep and maintain?
Yes, and we treat it as a deliverable rather than an afterthought. Process documents, configuration rationale, master data rules and test scripts are handed over in editable formats your team owns. Documentation that only the consultant understands has very little value.
